please tell me the use of "the & a/an"

sometimes i get confuse wether to put the or a/an

is it ok if i dont put "the" where i supposed to put it . . Thinking

please correct my writing if they're gramatically wrong

which or what?

I want to ask somebody which color he likes. I think is "Which color do you like?", but I read, that correct is "What color do you like?"

Please, help me. And can you tell me why?

talking & speaking

2. I am speaking to you

Hi all,

I have bit confused about sentense 'My family had had that dog for years' . Is that correct?. I have found that on 'Past perfect simple' page in this site. Can anyone explain this?.
