Quick Tip - specially vs especially

Average: 2.8 (11 votes)

Take a look at the following sentences. Which one do you think is right?

"I got home especially late yesterday."

"I got home specially late yesterday."

Especially is used to give us more information about verbs, adverbs and adjective. It means 'particularly / exceptionally' or, to keep it simple, 'very'. Specially should not be used in this context unless you are speaking in a very informal / casual situation.

"I baked this cake especially for you."

"Marcus wrote an especially good essay."

"He took an especially cautious attitude to the task"

" A lot of people suffered in the heatwave, especially the children and the elderly."
